Partition cf card pc/tos compatible

Post by diamond1974 »

I am trying to partition a cf card to be pc/tos compatible but when I do I get a Illegal pc compatible partition type and it will not let me partition it, and I bought my hard driver from best electronics so I did not get a manual with it. So I think I am doing something wrong but have no idea was. Any help would be appreciated.

Did you manually enter any partition types? If you did, please remove them. HDDRUTIL automatically assigns the right partition types, i.e. when partitioning don't enter anything but the partition sizes.
Manually editing partition types is only useful in special cases, but not for creating regular TOS and/or Windows compatible media.

One more question
I partitioned the cf card with byte swapping and now the pc and falcon can read and rite to the card but what ever was written by the pc the falcon can not see on the card and vice versa.

Whether the byte-swapping option is required depends on the hardware interfaces being used. If it's IDE on both the Falcon and the PC byte-swapping is required. If both the PC and the Falcon use SCSI it's not required.
Anyway, as long as both computers can access the partitions on the CF card this should be fine. Are you actually sure that you are using the same partition with both computers? I would expect that the PCs sees only one partition, regardless on how many you create, because Windows does not support more than one partition on removable media.

I only made 1 partition it said it would treat it like a large floppy disk, and I am using internal IDE on the falcon I just replaced the old hard drive, and on the pc I am using a pcmcia card reader.

Ah, I see. So you did not enter any partition data at all, which results in a very special format (like a floppy disk). In your case you should enter the size (but no partition ID) for exactly one partition. The partition must be less than 1 GB because TOS 4.0 does not support bigger partitions.
Actually, the procedure is the same as partitioning for TOS, except for selecting the TOS/Windows compatibility option.

By the way, your manual is already on the way.

Thank you for sending the manual and the hdd 8.45
So to partition just start a 0 and then 1, 2 etc. and the pc will see the 0 partition and just the tos/windows selected and no boxes checked below that.
Thank you for answering my questions, you have great customer support. I will wait for the manual so I don't keep asking questions that I should know the answers to.

You will have to enable the "Byte-Swapping" checkbox, the others should not be relevant for you.
