Booting from Drive C, using CF Flash

Post by bid »

Hi,

I have installed a fresh TOS/DOS partition of 510MB onto a 4GB CF Card mounted in my TT030.

The SCSI ID for the CF Card is 0, and I have no problems accessing the partition (in either PC or TT0030).

However, for some reason, it will not boot from Drive C. I find this odd. I have partitioned, initialised and also selected 'install hddriver'. HDDRIVER.SYS is present, and I have tried this several time, and even tried alternative SCSI ID's. Same issue.

Can anyone help me?

Kind regards,
Bid

Hi,

your SCSI reader (which model is it?) might require initiator identification. HDDRIVER provides this feature, but TOS doesn't, and in the first phase of the boot process HDDRIVER has not been started yet. Because TOS is responsible for bootstrapping the hard disk driver it cannot load it from devices that require initiator identification.
By the way, wrong termination can also be the reason for your problem.

Cheers

Uwe,

Thanks for info. ... I had a bit of a hiatus from Atari, as I fell ill (for a few years), and so never solved this issue.

I've dug out the TT, and although I have used from time to time, I just booted HDDRIVER from Floppy, in which worked well enough (as a FDD inserted make OS boot quicker anyway.

However, I've now found a more permanent residence for my prized Atari, and if its ok, I would like to see if I can resolve the issue.

Also, I have had some other glitches, which I am sure are my lack of knowledge, of which SCSI and ASCI wont play at the same time.

1. I am using "I-O Data IDE to SCSI R-IDSC-E/R Converter Board 1.30.9 IDSC21-E"
- Just like this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/I-O-Data-Device ... SwB4NWwC3b
- Its a really great device, and I've been very happy with it, excellent speed etc.

2. The jumper settings are described here http://www.synack.net/~bbraun/IDSC21-E_ ... ttings.pdf
- There are 9 jumper positions, of which I have set to '1' the positions two, four and five

3. I've recently been trying to plug in my MegaFile 60 and to have both MegaFile on the ASCI and my 4GB internal SCSI to IDE CF card to both work.
- I want to transfer files to my Mega4, as this is what is plugged into my MIDI gear.
However, on 'Device Check' when both are turned on, I can see:-
Bus 0: Atari ASCI
00.00: Ataru SH/MEGAFILE
Bus 1: Atari SCSI
02.00: CF Card
07.00: Atari TT

This only works, when I boot with the Megafile turned off, and then turn it on and 'bus rescan'

If I turn on MegaFile and have my CF Card on the internal SCSI powered up, I get no hard drives at all, even when I 'install devices' from desktop.
- With MegaFile powered down, Atari will boot from CF Card
- With the MegaFile powered up, and plugged into external ASCI, and with my internal SCSI unplugged, the MegaFile usually works (but not today?).
However, I can see the MegaFile (which has 4 partitions) when I select 'Device Check'

4. I am very unsure on termination, although I understand the 'T' style SCSI is on the TT with the TT as the ID 7

5. I understand less how TOS does the bootstapping. However, my TT has unfortunately TOS3.01 ... which I should probably replace?

I have a stack of other SCSI devices, which I have unfortunately been unable to use for a while. And I am quite rusty on how to get these items communicating again.

I should also probably upgrade HDDRIVER, as I am only on 8.40 currently. But it has been a while since I have been able to play atari today.

Kind regards,
John

Also all the best for 2017.

I'm afraid I cannot tell how a device you connect to the ACSI bus can influence a device connected to the SCSI bus, But anyway, as far as termination is concerned the usual SCSI rules apply.
Still using TOS 3.01 is rather unusual, indeed, updating to 3.06 would probably be a good idea. I also recommend downloading HDDRIVER 8.49 if you are still running 8.40. You can simply download it on the HDDRIVER website after entering your registration data.
