I recently resurrected my old 1040STE. It has its scsi hd drives and a cd-rom built in an old pc desktop case.
I use hushi a the scsi driver and an old version of cd-tools for the cd rom wich workes well.
The cd rom drive is a very old toshiba drive which uses cd caddies. Because I do not have a caddy any more, I decided to replace the drive with a yamaha CRW 4416 scsi cd burner. This model is recognized, but not supported by metados.
So my question:
Does hddriver support the crw4416 as a cd-rom (I don't think that the st is fast enough to burn cds)?
Do I really need to spend 41€ for hddriver just to get the cdrom working again, or is there a cheaper alternative (besides trying to get a caddy from somewhere)?
Thanks!

Re: Resurrecting my old Atari - cd rom question
Hi,
please note that for burning CDs you need a CD writer software like ExtenDOS pro (http://www.anodynesoftware.com). HDDRIVER is a driver for hard disks and similar devices, but HDDRIVER does not burn CDs. HDDRIVER has integrated support for a low level SCSI interface. ExtenDOS pro (and other third-party software as well) uses this SCSI driver to get access to SCSI, IDE and ATAPI devices. I think ExtenDOS pro can also work without a SCSI driver, but you should consult the ExtenDOS pro website for details.
Cheers

Re: Resurrecting my old Atari - cd rom question
I just want to read CDs, not burn (it's a nice-to-have). I try using the cd burner because I don't have a SCSI CD Rom drive around.
My question: Is there some kind of Metados which supports just reading of cd with CD burners?

Re: Resurrecting my old Atari - cd rom question
Hi,
for reading CDs you also need a CD ROM driver. Any CD ROM driver should do, but if Metados does not work you can try SPIN!. Note, however, that both products are no longer supported.
I suggest that you try to find more information in the general Atari forums because reading CD ROMs with the Atari is a topic that is not related to HDDRIVER unless you use a CD ROM driver that makes use of HDDRIVER's SCSI driver, like ExtenDOS.
Cheers
