There is one more thing that you should do: Run the SCSI Driver test suite with your drive connected, switched on, and a medium inserted.

Success.
Carefully booting and inserting the EZ disc just after HDdriver starts, it is recognised and then selecting TOS, instead of Mint, I'm able to access the partitions and folders.
Maybe the Mint partition config was upsetting it and I can't be bothered changing it.
TOS can only access the small C partition on the Milan HD but I can at least copy the 230mb discs onto it.
